2023 Submissions

How to submit a proposal:

Please use the Google form (link below) to submit project proposals for a multiple media exhibition to be held in New York City in March of 2024. Proposals are due no later than November 15, 2023. DxD exhibits works in a wide range of media and formats  such as digital, analog, physical, performance, sound works, walks, installations, creative coding, participatory mapping, drawings, etc.  We welcome proposals that expand beyond the gallery walls and will support projects that occur in public spaces and in unconventional formats. Please see some samples of past exhibitions on our website

Artists are expected to reference or use at least one NYC Open Data dataset in their project. Other data including data derived from novel and experimental collection systems are welcome (in addition to the use of  NYC Open Data dataset). We’re interested in participatory data collection; in radical and cognitive mapping; in data that is represented or experienced through time, sound, and other senses.

Data Through Design will provide a $900 stipend for project fabrication as well as Installation and promotional support. Work must be installation-ready by March 12, 2024.

Please note: applicants must be approved to work in the US in order to be paid a stipend.

There are a lot of ways to participate in Open Data Week. If you have an idea for a project that doesn’t fit into an art exhibition see more about Open Data Week here:

Detailed submission guidelines are below.

Requirements

Eligibility: Creative project proposals from artists and professionals (as individuals or collaborative teams) of all backgrounds are welcome. 8-10 projects will be selected for the 2024 exhibition based on the strength of the project ideas and plans, proposal clarity, and relevance to the theme. Stipends will be provided to support project production. Participants who are not US citizens must have approval to receive the DxD stipend in the United States.

Media and formats: We welcome art in a wide range of formats from analog and physical media to digital, site specific, multimedia and interdisciplinary works. We embrace projects that work outside the gallery space, that create interventions in public spaces, and participatory works. Past projects have included two and three dimensional projects, interactive works involving sound, performance, coding, participatory mapping, and installation works.

Where possible, DxD will support and collaborate with artists to obtain permits for projects presented outside in public venues such as the Open Streets program.

FAQs

Proposal Submission

  1. Is use of a NYC Open Data dataset required? Can I also use other data that I’ve created or found elsewhere? DxD is committed to supporting open data. Projects should utilize at least one NYC Open Data dataset as content, subject or inspiration for the project because DxD is part of the New York City Open Data Week, a celebration of the City’s Open Data program. It is supported by the Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation and BetaNYC’s Open Data Week. Projects can also use data from any others sources.

  2. My work is digital but the exhibit will be in-person, can I still apply? Yes, we can display digital works in the gallery but artists should provide equipment to display digital work. We have limited materials for use by some projects, such as projection screens.

  3. I’ve applied before, can I apply again? You are welcome to apply again with a new project.

  4. I have a piece that’s already completed, can I submit it? Yes.

  5. Can I apply with a team of collaborators? Yes, but please note that the stipend will need to be split amongst the team.

  6. When do artists receive stipends? Stipends are provided after the exhibition. We are looking into providing them earlier and will update the information here when we have it.

  7. I’m not in NYC/the US, can I still apply? Applicants from outside NYC and the US will be considered. To receive a stipend you must be eligible to work in the US. Please note that we cannot cover shipping costs for physical works.

  8. I’m a student, can I apply? Yes.

  9. I’m not a full time artist/I’ve never been in an exhibit, can I apply? Yes! We welcome submissions from artists, designers, journalists, coders, tinkerers, makers, community-members, data fans and beyond.

Artwork

  1. What kinds of works does DxD consider? We are interested in projects that interpret data and the role of data in our society that might be embodied in physical, digital, sound, performance, or time-based works, as well as documentation from live, on-the-ground experiences. We are especially interested in  projects that give data a physical presence.  Please visit the galleries from past exhibits to see the variety of works we have included in the past.

  2. For physical artworks, what is the dimension of exhibition space for my artwork? This will depend on the venue we’re able to find. We will work with dimensions of accepted projects in our search for an exhibition space.

  3. I am creating a new artwork for this exhibit. Do artists have access to or can they get help with resources such as renting equipment, accessing production facilities, or collaborating with technical experts? We may be able to connect artists to students at Pratt Institute. Artists can use the stipend to pay for that low-cost assistance.

  4. I’d like to create an on-the-ground experience/performance piece that happens during the show (therefore, I won’t have anything to show in the gallery at the opening), can I still apply? Yes, we encourage works that take place outside of the gallery but also want to be able to represent the project in the gallery exhibition. Please think about how documentation of the project-in-progress and from the live event might be included in a gallery exhibition. If your project works with the Open Streets program, we will help with the permit and other support.
