Data Through Design 2027 - Submission Guidelines



Please review the below before submitting your application

We are looking for proposals that speak directly to the theme and surface unique stories or original perspectives through the lens of the chosen NYC Open Data dataset. 

As part of our review process, we consider the clarity of your proposal (both the written description and the mockup designs), the feasibility of the project, and your past experience as an artist. 

Proposals should consider how the project will be completed within the given time frame and budget, and your portfolio should demonstrate previous experience in the same or similar medium as the project. 

Before submitting your proposal, please also ensure that all links, images, and files are working, accessible, and attached.

  • Proposal Description (200 words) 

    • Describe the concept behind your idea, why you want to make this project, and the audience it will speak to.

    • Describe how your project addresses the 2027 Open Call theme.

    • Describe how your project will be presented in the gallery, whether it’s interactive, and any potential maintenance it will require.

  • Project mockup (3 images)

    • Present the project from at least 3 different views or sides. Make sure it’s clear how the final piece will look in the gallery.

    • Label all materials, dimensions, colors, needs for electricity and screens etc. Make note of any special installation needs or excessive size or weight.

    • If the project is interactive, visually demonstrate how visitors will interact with the piece.

  • Datasets used

    • List at least 1 open dataset from NYC Open Data. 

    • List any other datasets you will use directly or indirectly.

  • How will the data be used in your project? (100 words?)

    • Explain how the data will be incorporated into your piece and presented to the audience.

  • Portfolio

    • Make sure your portfolio looks professional.

    • Include projects that demonstrate previous experience in the same or similar medium as the project. Consider previous projects that incorporate data, use similar fabrication methods, or similar scale.
