Data Through Design 2027 - Submission Rubric

Rubric Used by DxD curatorial collective in Proposal Review:

The following aspects of each proposal are evaluated as a holistic, intersecting set of criteria by the curatorial collective when reviewing proposals.

• Connections to DxD exhibition purpose: NYC Open Data Usage & DxD Theme  (1-5)
  Does it use NYC Open data as at least one part of the project?
  Does it engage with this year’s DxD theme? 

• Uniqueness  (1-5):
  Is the project original, a distinct idea, process, or approach? 

• Significance and artistic quality: (1-5)

Does the project propose a meaningful way to interact with, interpret, or look at lived experience and/or social issues and/or urban phenomena through data? Is the idea compelling, interesting and developed formally? 

• Clarity of proposal and project sketch / mockup (1-5)
  Is the concept and intention of the project clear and well developed?
  Does the proposal explain what the project will look and be like, and how the audience will interact with it?

• Feasibility (1-5)
  Is the timeline realistic? Can it be completed on time and to high standards?

• Artist past experience (portfolio): (1-5)
  Does the portfolio demonstrate an established practice with clear work samples/history of work, as well as professionalism?

Does it include only projects that the artist contributed significantly to, and makes the proposing artists’ role in collaborative projects clear?

Does it demonstrate previous experience in the same or similar medium as the project (i.e. projects that incorporate data, use similar fabrication methods, or similar scale)?

• Audience (1-5)
  How does the project engage the audience? Does it bring data to life for a broader audience? How accessible is the concept behind the project?

• Will the project fit and make sense in the gallery space and with the rest of the exhibition? (1-5)

• Restrictions: Was generative AI used to write or create the proposal? (Y/N)
